Alzheimer's Awareness Month at Luther Village on the Park 

In recognition of World Alzheimer's Month this September and World Alzheimer's Day on September 21, we've gathered a collection of resources, and information to help residents and families learn more about dementia, cognitive health, and the services available in the community and at The Village.   

You Should Know: 

  • Alzheimer's disease is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that destroys brain cells, causing thinking ability and memory to decline over time.  

  • Alzheimer's disease is not a normal part of aging, and is irreversible.  

  • It’s only been formally identified in the last 100 years. 

  • In the last 20 years, more steps have been taken to fight the stigma against dementia and support people living with dementia and caregivers. 

  • More than 25 different diseases and conditions can cause dementia. 

  • Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia and counts for 60-80% of all cases of dementia 

  • As of January 1, 2025, we estimate that 771,939 people in Canada are living with dementia 

  • By 2030, nearly 1 million people in Canada could live with dementia.

  • Tovertafel: Award Winning Healthcare Innovation: At the Village, our secured Memory Care floor (Parkview Suites) use the Tovertafel in our programming to encourage movement, social engagement, sensory stimulation, and joyful interactions through games specifically designed for individuals living with cognitive impairment. 

  • Companion Pets & Dementia Care: We provide companion Pets to provide comfort, companionship, and emotional connection for residents living with cognitive impairment a the Village. These lifelike pets can help spark conversation, reduce feelings of loneliness, and create meaningful moments of engagement.  

  • Dementia-Friendly Design & Wayfinding: Our secured Memory Care floor incorporates dementia-friendly design features, including colour-coded doors, familiar artwork, interactive hallway murals, and comfortable gathering spaces that help support independence and confidence.  

  • Music Therapy & Cognitive Wellness Music plays an important role in memory care at the Village. Through group sessions, individualized programming, and our partnership with Wilfrid Laurier University's Music Therapy Program, residents benefit from opportunities that support recognition, engagement, self-expression, and emotional well-being.
