We were honoured when the son of a long-time resident wanted to show his appreciation for the care his mom received over the last twelve years - most recently on the Memory Care floor. He told our Executive Director that he wanted to do something “team member's lives easier” as he recounted the times he witnessed staff going above and beyond in their care of his mother, along with the other residents living in the Parkview Suite (2nd floor). A number of options were entertained before deciding on the idea of Diversion Murals for the elevators and exit doors (4 in total).

Diversion

These creative pieces of art are not only aesthetically pleasing, but act as a diversion for residents that provides a feeling of peace and comfort while living with dementia. The murals make doors and elevators less noticeable to residents which reduces their anxiety. Rather than seeing an exit door, they instead see an attractive image, which helps promote feelings of safety and security. When residents feel safe and secure, they are less likely to become agitated and wander, which allows the nurses to focus on providing care, rather than redirection. Staff and families alike are grateful for this gift, which immediately made a positive difference once they were installed.
